Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad responded to 9,662 individual calls for help in 2016
back to full press release list

Last year the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad responded to 9,662 individual calls for help. That means, even accounting for the fact that last year was a leap year, Rescue 1 (Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad) answered, on average, more than one emergency call every single hour of every single day for the entire year!

Here's something else to consider: Sometimes a single call-for-help requires that more than a single emergency vehicle is needed… many times Rescue 1 has had to send two or even three units to the scene! So when you add up the total number of vehicles that sped out our doors to help our neighbors in distress, the number swells to a remarkable 11,413.

As the only rescue squad serving Bethesda-Chevy Chase, numbers like 9,662 or 11,413 are clearly far beyond what most people consider even ‘do-able' by a predominantly all volunteer organization. Yet this year wasn't even a record breaker for Rescue 1.

What's more, the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad exists and operates almost entirely on donations from the neighbors and local businesses they serve. In fact, Rescue 1 saves residents almost $4,000,000 each year because of all the rescue personnel Montgomery County doesn't have to pay.

For those so inclined, last year Rescue 1 responded to the following emergency calls for help (a very partial list):

FIRE/RESCUE SQUAD – 2,168 Calls including:

  • Fires, Car Accidents, Entrapments, Electrical, Gas Leaks,
  • Carbon Monoxide, Metro, Hazardous Materials

AMBULANCE/MEDIC – 9,006 calls including:

  • Chest Pain, Heart, Stroke – 795 Calls
  • Seizure – 186 Calls
  • Trouble Breathing – 744 Calls
  • Unconscious – 206 Calls
  • Decreased Conscious – 687 Calls
  • Personal Injury Collision – 1188 Calls
  • Injured Persons – 1427 Calls
  • Hemorrhage – 187 Calls
  • Obstetrics - 17 Calls
