Two volunteer members of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad (BCCRS) were recognized for outstanding academic performance during a Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services graduation ceremony held on Thursday, March 2, 2001. B-CC volunteer Adam Shannon was awarded prestigious A. Marvin Gibbons Award for the being top academic student in the Essentials of Firefighting Class # 00-04. Rescuer Geoffrey Underwood was honored for scoring the highest grades in Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) Class #284. A total of nine BCCRS volunteer members were recognized for graduating from Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) and Essentials of Firefighting classes held at Montgomery County's Fire and Rescue Training Academy. EMT-Basic is the first level of medical training for Rescue Squad volunteers, the course consists of over 130 hours of classroom time, not including the time spent riding Rescue Squad Ambulances on actual emergency calls. Essentials of Firefighting consists of over 120 hours of classroom and practical training to develop firefighter/rescuers, including real live firefighting evolutions in a controlled environment.

Last year B-CC Rescue Squad responds to over 10,000 emergency calls in Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Glen Echo, Cabin John and upper Northwest DC. B-CC was one of the busiest fire/rescue stations in Montgomery County for 2000. The Rescue Squad is comprised of over 150 volunteer firefighter/rescuers, a weekday staff of 10 employees, and two weekday Montgomery County Paramedics. This year marks the 61st year of continued Rescue Squad service to the community. Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad does not accept any direct tax funding from either Montgomery County or the District of Columbia; the organization relies on contributions from individuals and businesses within the community.
