Bethesda-based B.F. Saul Insurance and Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company have awarded the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad a $10,466 grant for 12 sets of personal protection Emergency Medical Service (EMS) gear. The protective clothing, including jacket and pants, are specifically designed to, among other things, protect first responders from contact with blood and bodily fluid-borne pathogens when responding to an emergency medical call or accident. In addition, the outer shell of the gear protects against flash fires.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have enough protective clothing to outfit all our Squad’s EMS personnel,” points out Ned Sherburne, Chief of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad. “This grant, which will substantially close that gap, will provide our first responders with top-of-the-line protective gear, allowing them to do their jobs more efficiently and effectively. Ultimately, this will make the community safer. I want to thank B.F. Saul and Fireman’s Fund for recognizing a critical need of our Rescue Squad.”

“We are proud to support this volunteer rescue squad and to give back to the community in such a meaningful way,” states Burke Hayes, president of B.F. Saul Insurance. “These men and women are fully committed to protecting the lives of our residents, and this grant is a small token of our appreciation for their work.”

The grant was funded by Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company, a premier property and casualty insurance company that also provides grants to fire departments through its Fireman’s Fund Heritage (SM) program. Under the program, local agencies like B.F. Saul Insurance that sell Fireman’s Fund products are able to direct grants to support local fire departments and the communities they serve. Since the program’s inception in 2004, Fireman’s Fund has provided over $10 million to fire departments and fire service agencies across the country for needed equipment, firefighter training and community education. Additional information about the program can be found at www.firemansfund.com/heritage. For more information on B.F. Saul, visit www.bfsaulinsurance.com.
