Mark your calendar for the next Rescue Day, to be held Saturday, October 4, 2008, in conjunction with the Taste of Bethesda, the outdoor food festival held just blocks from the Rescue Squad.
Rescue Day 2007 drew 2,000 visitors on a warm October day for tours
of the station, demonstrations of lifesaving rescue and medical equipment,
and an up-close view of a helicopter that flew in especially for
the event.
Inside the Squad's cavernous engine room, visitors explored
the Squad's ambulances; learned about the Squad's lifesaving services;
learned how to call 9-1-1; received free junior firefighter hats, balloons, and other giveaways; got
an up-close view of "Rescue 15," the Squad's historic 1972 Cadillac ambulance (restored by the Squad's own Alumni Association);
learned how they can help the Rescue Squad by volunteering and donating;
and enjoyed a model railroad display.
Outside, visitors viewed the Squad's huge rescue trucks as
well as fire engines and trucks from neighboring fire departments, a child safety seat demonstration, and a Kids' Safety House. Rescue Squad 19, one of the Squad's two "rolling toolboxes," was the star of the show in the back parking lot. A Rescue
Squad crew used advanced lifesaving tools to cut the roof and doors off
a car within minutes of arriving at a simulated vehicle collision with
a patient trapped inside. Meanwhile, kids (and picture-taking parents) enjoyed what
has become a favorite hands-on activity during Rescue Day: using a fire
hose to put out a simulated fire. On the front lawn of the station, kids
enjoyed playing in a moonbounce.
The day was punctuated by the exciting arrival of U.S.
Park Police helicopter "Eagle 1," which swooped in and landed
in the parking lot of the Squad to the amazement of every visitor. Kids and families explored the inside of the helicopter, used to whisk sick and injured patients to area hospitals when
time is truly of the essence, while the crew talked about their lives as flight medics and lifsavers.
Over 80 members of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad enjoyed meeting the public, providing tours and demonstrations, and teaching kids about fire and safety issues.
The Rescue Squad would like to thank the following fire/rescue departments and organizations for appearing at Rescue Day 2007 and for their generous assistance:
Gaithersburg-Washington Grove Volunteer Fire Department
Glen Echo Fire Department
Montgomery County Safe Kids' Buckle Up Program
National Institutes of Health Fire Department
Northern Virginia NTRAK Model Railroaders (NVNTRAK)
United States Park Police Aviation Section
