Rescue Squad's Friday Night Crew Extricates Severly Injured Patient

The Rescue Squad's Friday Night Crew extricated the severely injured driver of a car that ran off Bradley Boulevard, broke a telephone pole, and overturned.  At about 0245 hours Rescue Squad 741, Medic 741 and Ambulance 726 were dispatched along with the Bethesda Fire Department for a personal injury collision at the intersection of Bradley Boulevard and Fernwood Road.  The initial dispatch reported a vehicle overturned, with patients trapped and ejected.

Units arrived on scene to find a single vehicle that had left the road at a curve traveling at a high rate of speed, broke a telephone pole into 3 parts, and continued into a wooded area, where it overturned and came to rest next to a small tree about 25 yards from the road.  Wires were down alongside the road, between the road and the vehicle.  The Rescue Squad used a variety cutters and spreaders to cut the roof posts and force the driver’s door open.  The operation was complicated by heavy rain and wet underbrush surrounding the vehicle.

After being transferred to Medic 741, the patient was assessed and found to have a significant head injury.

The crew from Engine 726 searched the surrounding wooded areas, but did not find a second patient.  Later it was learned that the vehicle’s passenger had crawled out of the car and walked away from the scene.
