Rescue Squad Manages Multi-Casualty Beltway Accident
The Rescue Squad responded with 4 units to a multi-vehicle accident on the Inner Loop of the Beltway just before Georgia Avenue that left nine persons injured. The Rescue Squad was dispatched at about noon to the collision that involved a tractor-trailer and at least four other vehicles. Engine 719 from Silver Spring was first to arrive on scene and conducted triage, identifying multiple patients of all medical priorities. When Rescue Squad units arrived on scene, Chief 741 Echo took command of the incident, managing the resources that were responding and coordinating the transport of patients to four local hospitals. Five of the nine patients were treated as traumas, including one child, and transported to local trauma centers. No one was trapped or pinned in the wreckage, but Medic 741 and Ambulance 741 Charlie were given patients upon arrival. The crew from Ambulance 726, along with Bethesda’s Engine 726, staffed Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service’s mass casualty transport bus, which transported three patients. Rescue Squad 741's crew was kept busy with stabilizing and packaging patients for transport. The last unit cleared the scene about an hour after the initial dispatch. In addition to the Rescue Squad, units from Silver Spring, Chevy Chase, Kensington, Wheaton, and Bethesda responded. Return to "The Squad in Action"
