Fire in Garage Under Grocery Store
Rescue Squad 741 led the attack group in extinguishing an auto on fire in a garage underneath a busy grocery store on a Sunday afternoon. The Rescue Squad was dispatched on Box 6-1 with units from Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and Glen Echo for smoke coming from the underground garage beneath the Giant Food store at Arlington Road and Bethesda Avenue. The Squad arrived on scene and reported moderate smoke coming from the P1 level. It identified the location of the vehicle on fire, took charge of the fire attack group, and directed the first-due engine company to the fire. Once they had a water supply, the engine crew quickly extinguished the fire, although there continued to be significant smoke in the garage. There also was an initial report of an unattended infant in a vehicle in the garage. The Squad crew quickly found the child and mother and directed them to safety out of the garage’s rear exit. Ambulance 741 Echo’s crew found the mother and child and assessed them to confirm that they were not injured. The Rescue Squad crew also conducted primary and secondary searches of the garage, finding no one else. Return to "The Squad in Action"
