Rescue Squad Extricates Driver from Vehicle Hit by Truck
Rescue Squad 741 extricated the driver of an Audi who was trapped in his vehicle following an early morning two-vehicle collision. Rescue Squad 741 was dispatched to northbound Connecticut Avenue just outside the Capital Beltway at about 0500 hours. First arriving Engine 707 from Chevy Chase reported one trapped and requested a medic unit. Since B-CC’s medic was on another call, Medic 742 from Wheaton responded. Chief 741 from B-CC also responded and took command of the operation. The Squad arrived on scene to find an Audi that had been struck on its side by a roofing truck and pushed into a traffic sign. The crew stabilized the vehicle on step chocks and began its extrication by cutting the traffic sign away from the driver’s door with hydraulic cutters. It then was able to access and remove the door using spreaders and cutters. Once the sign and door were removed, crews were able to gain access to the driver. They removed him from the vehicle and turned him over to Ambulance 705 from Kensington, which began an initial assessment. Medic 742 arrived soon thereafter, initiated advanced life support measures and transported the patient to the hospital.
