Early Morning Extrication on Tuckerman Lane
Rescue Squad 741B and Chief 741 responded with units from the Bethesda and Rockville Fire Departments to an early morning collision that completely sheared off a telephone pole, and left the vehicle overturned with the driver trapped.
Units were dispatched at 0620 hours to the 5500 block of Tuckerman Lane (near the intersection of Kings Riding Way) for a personal injury collision with a report of one overturned and one trapped. Chief 741 arrived on scene first, reported an SUV on its side with the driver pinned, and took command of the operation.
Upon arrival, the squad crew quickly stabilized the vehicle using struts on both sides. They then cut all 4 posts on the top (passenger) side of the vehicle in addition to the A and D posts on the bottom of the vehicle. This required the use of 2 hydraulic cutters and the combi-tool. This enabled the crew to fold down the vehicle’s roof, providing access to the patient. They then cut the steering wheel, which released the patient, who was quickly removed and transported to the Suburban Hospital trauma center. The entire extrication took approximately 40 minutes.
