Mid-Day Fire on Aberdeen Road
Rescue Squad 741 was first on scene at a mid-day fire that fully engulfed a large shed that was fueled by at least one propane tank.
Units from the B-CC Rescue Squad and the Bethesda, Glen Echo, and Cabin John Fire Departments were dispatched at 1333 hours for a house fire on Aberdeen Road with a report of fire in the rear. RS 741 arrived on the scene and found a large (approximately 20’ x 50’) shed sitting just a few feet behind the main house. Heavy fire and smoke were showing from the shed. Just as personnel came around the corner into the back yard, they heard a loud explosion within the shed that turned out to be a propane tank blowing up. B-CC Rescue Squad Chief Ned Sherburne, who still was responding, reported hearing the explosion while still a couple of blocks away from the scene.
The Rescue Squad crew searched the house, with the primary search negative. Engine crews quickly knocked the bulk of the fire, thereby allowing only a small extension to the house. However, it took an extended period of time to fully douse the fire in the shed, and to extensively overhaul it to ensure that there was no further extension to the house.
In addition to Rescue Squad 741, Ambulance 741B responded on the initial alarm, and Medic 741 responded on the rapid intervention dispatch.
