Rescue Squad 741 Responds to D.C for Auto Extrication and House Fire

The crew of Rescue Squad 741 proved its mettle  once again when requested by the D.C. Fire and EMS Department to respond to a personal injury collision on the morning of May 21.

Shortly before 10:00 a.m., D.C Fire requested Rescue Squad 741 (one of the Squad’s two heavy rescue units) to respond to a collision with persons trapped at the intersection of Nebraska and Nevada Avenues, N.W.  The  Squad  arrived on scene to find an auto that had rolled onto its driver’s side with the front end against a tree. D.C. Engine 31 had begun stabilizing the vehicle by strapping it back against the tree.  After completing stabilization, the Rescue Squad crew completely removed the vehicle’s roof.  After removing the windows, they cut the posts on the (top) passenger side, folding the roof down, and cutting the bottom posts.  This allowed easy access to the driver, who was then quickly removed and transported by D.C. Fire and EMS.

When Rescue Squad 741 went into service, they were requested to transfer to the quarters of D.C. Engine 24/Rescue Squad 2.  Just as they arrived, a woman rushed into the station saying that her house was on fire.  Rescue Squad 741 requested a box assignment and responded to the house, on Gallatin Street, N.W.   Although there was nothing showing on arrival, they encountered heavy smoke on the second floor, with a fire in an upstairs rear bedroom.  The first arriving engine  quickly extinguished the fire in the  rear bedroom, while Rescue Squad 741’s crew completed a search of the building and assisted with ventilation.

After completing operations on Gallatin Street, Rescue Squad 741 returned to Bethesda at about 1145 hours.
