Avenel House Fire
Rescue Squad 741 and Chief 741 responded to an attic fire in a large single family home in Potomac that occurred during a thunder storm.
Units from the B-CC Rescue Squad, Cabin John, Bethesda, Rockville, and Fairfax County were dispatched at 1818 hours to the 9900 block of Avenel Farm Drive in Potomac. Many of the units that otherwise would have been due on the initial dispatch were responding to other calls at the same time due to the thunderstorm in the area.
First due Engine 710 checked on the scene with heavy smoke showing from the roof. Rescue Squad 741 was the first-arriving special services unit. After making a quick search of the first and second floors (which were clear of smoke), the crew proceeded to the attic, where it pulled ceiling to expose the fire for Engine 710’s crew, which quickly knocked down the bulk of the fire.
Chief 741 also responded and assumed Division 2 command.
After a brief break, the Rescue Squad’s crew assisted the other units with salvage and overhaul. RS 741 returned to service after approximately 90 minutes on scene.
